Excelsior Real Estate

With its main street leading straight to Lake Minnetonka and dotted with original storefronts, Excelsior is a quaint “Mayberry-esque” town steeped in history. Founded in the 1850s as a vacation and resort destination, the community draws thousands to its hot dining and leisure scene and those seeking retail therapy. However, everyone agrees that the town’s star attraction is Lake Minnetonka, the state’s ninth largest lake and home to the Port of Excelsior where pleasure craft, sailboats, and site seeing vessels are docked in the summer and fall.

The former Excelsior Amusement Park was the Lake’s rival between 1925-1973. Another attraction of old, the Minnehaha Steamboat, once shuttled vacationers around the lake until it sank. It has since been raised, restored and is back on the water ferrying visitors from Excelsior across the lake to Wayzata. Another turn of the century relic, the Excelsior Trolley, which once brought Minneapolis residents to their lake-side vacation homes, is a refurbished joy ride for residents and visitors.

Homes here, which average $737,000, are an eclectic mix of multi-million-dollar mansions and original vacation cottages. This western suburb is in the award-winning Minnetonka School District (ISD 276).

Community pride abounds. Excelsior celebrates year ‘round with such events as “Apple Days”, “Crazy Days”, “Arctic Plunge,” and its famous Fourth of July celebration. Children from Excelsior Elementary School dressed in their scary best wave to family and business owners with their annual Halloween Parade through the town.
