Orono Real Estate

Orono is a much sought-after community, thanks to it’s large, wooded home lots and its award-winning Orono School District. Known as “The Lakeshore City” Orono boasts 25 square miles, 7,500 residents, four public beaches, eight city parks, and several areas for lake access. Homes here sell for an average of $1,004,000.

With the mandate to provide five acres for every address, Orono homes are often out of site, down winding drives, and hidden by large trees or high shrubbery. This element of privacy attracts affluent homeowners, such as pro basketball player Kevin Garnett, business power brokers Bruce Dayton and Whitney McMillian, who seek to rest and relaxation. Woods, wetlands, and water make up the trio of attractions in this western enclave.

But Lake Minnetonka remains the biggest attraction, with Orono bordering multiple bays including Browns Bay, Crystal Bay, Stubbs Bay, Maxwell Bay, Northern Bay, Forest Lake Bay, West Arm Bay, Carmen Bay, and Spring Park Bay. Big Island and Mahpiyata Island are offshore but an official part of Orono. Natural areas abound – including Noerenberg Memorial Gardens, widely regarded as one of the finest formal gardens in Minnesota and the former turn of the century home of Grain Belt Brewery founder Frederick Noerenberg and family.

Founded in 1889, Orono lies directly west of Wayzata. It was named by its earliest residents after Orono, Maine. Orono borders the towns of Spring Park, Minnetonka Beach, Long Lake, and Wayzata.
